The Iranian dance group Khorshid Khanoom (Ms. Sun) was founded by Aram Bayat in 1988 in Montreal. Its main purpose is to preserve and teach the traditional art of Iranian dance. Iran is considered as one of the ancient world empires which devoted itself methodically and actively to the development of the art of dance. For this ancient nation, dancing has been an important social phenomenon and a religious ritual and so it is extremely important to preserve the dance heritage for Iranians of this generation and more importantly, it becomes an obligation to pass this fascinating art form to the next generation. Ironically, since the revolution in 1979, dance has been prohibited by the same nation that once gave it a central role in its own expansion and advancement. Iranian dance has a long and sacred history and tradition; it encompasses many varied and unique forms.
